The HDLC-Sync/Async Adapter performs the unique function of converting HDLC-Sync data to an asynchronous data stream for transmission through asynchronous data links. The Adapter provides the way to pass HDLC synchronous data over asynchronous data links such as satellites, ISM license-free radio modems, statistical multiplexers, and packetized routes. This adapter is the opposite of a typical sync/async adapter, designed for passing asynchronous data over synchronous data links. The HDLC-Sync/Async Adapter provides the reverse function, a more difficult requirement that was not available until the introduction of this DCB product. Applications for the HDLC-Sync/Async Adapter include: The HDLC-Sync/Async Adapter is easy to set up, simple to use. Most applications can use the default settings if the async speed of 115.2 Kbps is correct. There are only two settings. One is the speed of the async composite port, ranging from 9600 to 115,200 bps (default is 115.2 Kbps). The other setting is the HDLC port, changing from NRZ (default, typical for Frame Relay and X.25) to NRZI (used for SDLC applications, although SDLC will normally operate in NRZ mode).

The HDLC Synchronous port clocking may be provided by the adapter or , may be provided by an external clocking device such as a modem eliminator or the DTE device. The HDLC-Sync-Async converter may be configured to either source or accept clocking.

The HSAA-01 is normally used in pairs. However, some customers have created computer programs that allow the use of a single HSAA in some installations as a stand-alone asynchronous HDLC to Synchronous HDLC converter. Please call for more details.
