    DESCRIPTION


    The X2 is a dual modem, consisting of both a 900 MHz or 2.4 GHz spread spectrum frequency hopping spread spectrum wireless modem and a dial up modem. The X2 product is used to extend a dial up modem link via a wireless path. Applications for the X2 modem include "last mile" data extensions for home, office and industrial applications. The dial up modem can be 14.4 Kbps, 33.6 Kbps or a 56 Kbps V.90 modem.

    The X2 is ideal for remote data collection applications. In a data collection application (SCADA, remote telemetry, etc) the X2 is placed in an area with a dial up phone line. The dial line is used to reach the dial up modem, which is connected internally in the X2 to the spread spectrum radio modem. The radio modem is operated as a multidrop master and connected to a number of remote standalone radio modems. The remote standalone modems are in turn connected to data collection equipment. This arrangement allows a single dial up modem and the radios to take the place of many dial up modems and phone lines. The one time cost of the radios soon saves the month to month cost of many phone lines.

    The X2 is also great for use in rural areas where the last miles are difficult to reach via dial up phone lines. A standalone radio modem can be used at the terminal device, and the standalone radio modem connects via a wireless link to the X2, which has the internal dial up modem connected to a phone line. This arrangement can also be used in the opposite direction, where a call to the X2 is completed over the last several miles over the radio link. This can be very cost effective in hopping over LATA boundaries, where crossing a LATA line causes a phone call to change from a local call to an expensive long distance call.

    A LATA is a boundary created by the FCC to divide phone company jurisdictions. The term means "local access and transport area". Crossing a LATA line will usually greatly increase the cost of phone calls and private phone and data lines.
