DESCRIPTION

The WSS SR-1W is a wireless data communications system used to collect data from up to 96 remote factory floor devices. It then delivers that data error-free to a host computer over a single RS-232 port. Since the WSS-SR-1W is wireless, it eliminates the need to wire data collection stations back to the central data collection point. This is especially important for applications in the food processing industry and hazardous locations, where daily cleaning and periodic work station moves are an expensive maintenance problem.

The system normally operates in a data collection mode. Information received from remote user devices is transmitted to the host and sent out the host data port to a controlling computer. A second mode, two-way, allows the computer connected to the host unit to communicate with a single remote for programming, special data transfers, etc. In most installations, the host would programatically change modes every shift or daily to reset remotes, collect special data, or reprogram remote devices.

In the normal operating mode, the host unit polls all the remotes in a round-robin fashion. Any remote with data to send responds to the host poll by including all collected data in the poll response. The remotes buffer incoming data from their RS-232 ports based upon a valid block format. A valid block of data begins with the [STX] character and ends with the [ETX] character. Characters not bounded by the [STX] [ETX] characters are discarded by the remote. Any remote that fails to respond to 2 consecutive polls is temporarily dropped from the polling list. All dropped remotes are polled each 15 seconds and will be added back into the polling list when they respond. This allows maintenance workers to down a machine without affecting system operation.

Each remotes can buffer up to 32K bytes of data. This allows polling to be temporarily suspended without losing data. There is an additional 16K bytes of data in the host unit to hold in-transit data.

The two-way mode allows the host to communicate with a single remote in a two-way conversation. The two-way mode is started and ended with a special character sequence from the host computer to the host WSS SR-1W unit. In the two-way mode, the host suspends polling with all the other drops, allowing a dedicated two-way link from the host to the selected remote. The suspended remotes continue to collect data while polling is suspended. After ending the two-way mode, the other remotes are again polled and normal data collection is resumed.

The asynchronous ports can be individually set for speeds up to 38.4 Kbps. Hardware (CTS/Busy high or low) or software (Xon/Xoff even, odd, mark, space or transparent) flow control is also set on a port by port basis.

The WSS SR-1W network is a wireless link that runs at 57.6 Kbps internally. It transmits on the 900 MHz license-exempt ISM band. Wireless 2.4 GHz units are also available. The system is easily configured using a terminal or PC connected to the network management port or port one. Range is 1000 feet indoors using standard antennas or up to 15 miles with optional external antennas.

Configuration and diagnostic commands allow the system manager to view the configuration settings of both the local and remote WSS SR-1Ws, and to configure the local unit.

Installation of upgrades for new features and functions is simple... replace a firmware cartridge through a side-panel access door.

The WSS SR-1W is usually used to connect multiple remote workstations or robotic controllers (generically called Remote Terminal Units or RTUs) to a central controlling computer. The RTUs are often located on a factory floor consisting of one or more large rooms containing up to 96 RTUs. The RTUs operate autonomously gathering data and controlling their individual process, and periodically report back to the controlling computer. At various times, the controlling computer may halt all communications while it has a two-way conversation with a single RTU. This is usually used to reprogram the RTU, gather more detailed data, or simply reset the RTU. This system is customizable for different installations by changing the firmware that establishes protocols and operational methods. Many operational characteristics are configurable at installation time by using management commands.
